Primary Literacy Field Experience
Commodore Perry Elementary School
For my Primary Literacy Field Experience, I was able to join a kindergarten class for five days. During my time there, I was able to work with pairs of students in the hallway and teach a lesson to the entire class. My very first day I was able observe my cooperating teacher interact with her students in an engaging way. She loved to sing songs, move around, and connect with the students. When I came the second day, I was out in the hallway doing an activity with pairs of students. I went over the beginning of words with students using stamps.

The next two days after that, I was still in the hallway with students, but this time, working on rhyming words. My final day in the classroom was spent planning and delivering my lesson on the ending of words, -ap and -am. It was a great experience where I learned how to make learning letters and their sounds more engaging by creating chants and playing games. I am thankful to the cooperating teacher and her kindergarten class for allowing me to be a part of their classroom.

This field experience demonstrates 3D: Assessment in Instruction from Danielson's framework of teaching. While I was engaging students in activities, I was also assessing their knowledge. When I had students come out in the hallway, we played activity games to see where each student stood in that area of material. There were some students who excelled at recognizing the beginning of words or rhyming words, while other students had a difficult time. I helped those who needed more support, and challenged those who seemed to understand the material.
