1A: Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy
This component focuses on knowledge of content, understanding what a teacher needs to know prior to teaching the content, and knowing various strategies on how to teach as well as the relationships between subjects. Teachers must know how to control their students using a variety of strategies and methods. They should know their content well, understanding different tools to apply in different subjects so their students will understand.
It is important because teachers not only have to know skills for content of each subject, but they also have to have knowledge of how these skills can relate to others. It is also important for a teacher to know where their students are; are they understanding the content? or do they have misunderstandings about the content of the subject? Knowing the content is crucial because the student will be learning and soaking in the information that is given. If the teacher does not know the material, the student does not learn. Making sure the content is up to date is also important.
